Further Evidence That I Am A Lucky, Lucky Girl

I am amazed by the things that Shaun can do with the simplest food and just a tiny grill out on the balcony of our apartment. He marinated the chicken thighs in barbecue sauce, vinegar, garlic, salt and black pepper for less than an hour then threw them on the grill with some zucchini skewers just brushed with olive oil and minced garlic and plain sweet, white corn on the cob in their husks. Everything came out perfectly! The chicken was blackened just enough that the sauce wasn't overwhelming but the skin was flavorful and the meat was tender and juicy enough that the meat slid off the bone. The zucchini had a crispy, roasted skin and was soft on the inside and had just enough flavor without being oily. The corn was crunchy and sweet and yummy without any seasoning at all. We finished our meal off with a scoop of plain vanilla ice cream served over a slice of soft, ripe cantaloupe. It was a perfect summery meal for a warm night.

Kogi BBQ Truck

We finally tried Kogi BBQ last night and I have to say it more than lived up to all the hype. The whole idea seemed really gimmicky (lunch trucks that park in various spots around LA and whose whereabouts are announced via Twitter every couple of hours) but the concept of Korean-Mexican fusion was enticing so we tracked one down in Eagle Rock. It was scheduled to be parked on Eagle Rock Blvd. from 6-9 so we got there right at 5:59 and there was already a line, though the truck hadn't even arrived yet. The crowd was pretty evenly mixed, half hipsters dressed in silly outfits and Day-Glo Ray Bans and half Asian families.
The crew got things moving pretty quickly after they arrived and we were up to the front and ordering within 10 minutes. Shaun ordered a short-rib burrito and I ordered a short rib taco, a ginger chicken taco and a spicy pork taco. I wanted to try a Kimchi Quesadilla but I was really in the mood for meat so I will have to try it next time.

Unfortunately, Shaun didn't like his food but he is kind of notoriously unenthusiastic about life in general so I wasn't too surprised. Luckily for me, I loved my food and the half of his burrito that I ended up eating, too!
The tacos did not taste like Mexican tacos at all, it was more like Korean food wrapped in a tortilla but it was DELICIOUS. The tacos are topped with a sesame-chili salsa roja, julienne romaine lettuce and cabbage tossed in Korean chili-soy vinaigrette, cilantro-green onion-lime relish, crushed sesame seeds and sea salt. They are just $2 each and I would have been willing to pay much, much more for them. Worth the wait, worthy of the hype and a great deal!
